Winnipeg gets a bad rap for its weather. And too right. It’s freakin’ cold and freakin’ windy. But the people are sincerely NICE. REALLY nice. When we roll in that evening, the fabulous staff at the Fairmont are practically bending over backwards to help ensure Dola is taken care of. We’re feeling pretty warm and fuzzy at this point. That is until Michelle breaks to us some somewhat disturbing news… Just as we had convinced Madonna’s agent to stop their tour from following us, we find out that we now have a new celebrity stalker… Celine Dion.

After driving for three hours following our departure from Thunder Bay, we debated on attempting to truck on to Kenora before stopping for lunch, but with everyone feeling a little peckish, we decided to descend upon Dryden for this integral part of our daily routine - food. Randomly choosing a convenient roadside Husky House Diner, no longer had we been seated and Toast plugged in his laptop than Michelle had already realized – from reading the back on the menu – that we were in fact inside Canada’s very first and original Husky diner…. an icon in its self.

Rocking into Thunder Bay was another evening event – dark, and leaving us little opportunity to really suss out the town. Tips was also having a field day getting us to the hotel. Dave was having none of it, and turned her off to look at a map. Poor Tips is as delirious as us at all the driving it takes to get across this massive country! We can only assume Thunder Bay wasn’t properly mapped out for GPS, as at one point, Tips literally told us to drive onto some train tracks. We’ll let her off – it’s been a tough ride, and she has gotten us this far after-all, with only a couple of fairly minor detours.

Heading into the long-haul to Thunder Bay from the Soo, we fired up the team to engage in some good ol’ fashioned conversation. Fancy that. I have to say – when one of us laughs, it’s like a virus… We all catch it, and it doesn’t go away. I am going to have to call these guys every day once the tour ends, because I sure will miss these outbursts/sessions. We laugh so hard my abs hurt!
The only downer in team dynamic on this trip is that everyone keeps stealing my lines and passing them off as their own. It’s like I have to patent everything before it comes out of my mouth. Dave is particularly talented at this skill, and innocently tries to blame it on the fact that he’s in the front driving and can’t hear me say it first. I guess I’m just a producer of content for people. I mean, who really wants to hear an Australian accent, anyhow? We know that On Star doesn’t…

When we rocked up to our hotel, it was clear the Days Inn wanted to show off the fact that Dola & Co had decided to retire for the evening there, and consequently we scored prime parking. Perfectly timed too, as an entire stadium of people emptied out of a hockey game and got to come by and have a chat. Nice work.
Back to business – Toast and Cat headed off in a cab to hit up Future Shop, following a somewhat frightening incident which prevented us from uploading our video footage onto the laptop. The very kind employees there were extremely helpful, and the cab driver on the way home provided us with a definitive session of Soo-101, so we didn’t have to feel like we zipped through without some background on the town. We learned that we were only steps from the waterfront and the world famous shipping ‘locks’ – precisely where we wanted to be the next day for Dola’s portfolio building. Right…off to another 10pm dinner…and another town that stocks Kokanee. Sweeeeet. We needed one after this day.

During lunch in Massey we received a welcome interruption… Introducing: Frank >>>, an elderly gentleman who rocked up to the diner on his bright yellow electric scooter. Spotting him as a true-local from a mile away, Mich and Cat encouraged Toast to approach the gentleman to see whether he would be willing to share some local history with us. Toast proceeded to stalk the lovely man around the restaurant and finally asked, “Please, sir, but may I interview you for our tour?”

Arriving in Sudbury in the pitch dark didn’t allow us to really check out the town. After settling in for a late dinner at the Holiday Inn, we settled into our rooms and plugged into our laptops to catch up with emails we didn’t get to on the road.
Cat and Mich managed to have a lovely uninterrupted sleep, but when Toaster rocked up for breakfast, disturbingly looking more disheveled than usual, we learned Dave kept him up most of the night with a pretty serious session of snoring. Poor Toast.
